Motivation

How come this is always how kings motivate people in fairy-tales? Isn't there some other reward they can promise people? A medal? A title? Lands? Huge ransoms? A new car? A Disney coloring book?
I mean, really, how many national leaders today promise their citizens marriage to beautiful women in exchange for military service?
...
Actually, that might not be such a bad idea...It'd certainly boost enlistment! ;)
